Week 1: Prehistoric Minnesota

Students will study the climate of prehistoric Minnesota as well as the occurrences that shaped the geography of the state. Students will be introduced to Minnesota’s state symbols. 6.4.1.2.1

 

 

Week 2: Regions of Minnesota

Students will discuss the natural features of Minnesota. The students will distinguish the regions and discuss the state’s symbols.6.2.2.2.1, 6.3.1.1.1, 6.3.3.6.1, 6.3.4.10.1

 

 

Week 3: The Land and Its Resources

Students will discuss the climate and natural resources of Minnesota. 6.2.4.5.1, 6.3.1.1.1, 6.3.3.6.1

 

 

Week 4: Rivers, Waterfalls, Lakes

Students will study Minnesota’s bodies of water and will learn about how these bodies of water were formed. 6.3.3.6.1

 

 

Week 5: Early People in Minnesota

Students will learn about the early people of Minnesota and will discover how archaeologists can find out about these people. Students will learn about the sites of important archaeological finds. 6.3.3.6.1, 6.3.4.10.1, 6.4.1.2.1

 

 

Week 6: Chippewa (Ojibway)

Students will study features typical to American Indian tribes of Minnesota. Students will learn that tribes moved seasonally.6.3.4.10.1, 6.4.1.2.1, 6.4.4.15.1

 

 

Week 7: Dakota (Sioux) and the Dakota War

Students will gain knowledge of the Dakotas of Minnesota. They will discuss the traditions of the tribe and their interactions with settlers and other American Indians. 6.3.4.10.1, 6.4.1.2.1, 6.4.4.15.1, 6.4.4.19.3

 

October-December

 

Week 8: Minnesota's American Indians Today

Students will study laws that help protect American Indian rights. They will also examine the traditions American Indian teachers are trying to preserve. 6.1.5.10.1, 6.3.1.1.1, 6.4.1.2.1, 6.4.4.15.1

 

 

Week 9: European Explorers (French); What About the Vikings?

Students will learn about important explorers of Minnesota and their interactions with American Indian tribes. Students will also learn about conflicts between the French and British over land in Minnesota. 6.3.1.1.1, 6.4.1.2.1, 6.4.4.16.1

 

 

Week 10: Grand Portage: Fur Trading Days

Students learn about the importance of Grand Portage in opening up this region to settlers. 6.3.3.6.1, 6.3.4.10.1, 6.4.1.2.1

 

 

Week 11: Pioneers of Minnesota

Students will study the hardships faced by the early pioneers. 6.3.4.10.1, 6.4.1.2.1

 

 

Week 12: Spain, French, British and Americans Fight Over Minnesota

Students will learn about the conflicts associated with settling the land of Minnesota. 6.4.1.2.1, 6.4.4.16.1

 

 

Week 13: Louisiana Purchase, War of 1812, Minnesota Territory

Students will learn about Thomas Jefferson and his role in the Louisiana Purchase. They will also learn about the War of 1812 and how land became the Minnesota Territory. 6.4.1.2.1, 6.4.4.18.1

 

 

Week 14: Working Together to Build an Economy

Students will learn about factors that helped increase Minnesota’s population. They will also learn about Minnesota’s industries and men who had important roles in developing some of these industries. 6.3.1.1.1, 6.3.3.6.1, 6.3.4.10.1, 6.4.1.2.1

 

January-February

 

Week 15: Minnesota Becomes the 32nd State, 1858

Students will study the factors that led to Minnesota’s statehood and the creation of a state constitution. Students will discuss the symbols of the state. 6.4.1.2.1, 6.4.4.18.3

 

 

Week 16: State Government

Students will be introduced to the three branches of government. They will also learn about Minnesota’s government. 6.1.4.6.3,6.1.4.6.5, 6.1.4.6.1

 

 

Week 17: Lumber, Mining, Agriculture

Students will gain knowledge about the history of Minnesota’s three main industries. 6.3.3.6.1, 6.3.4.10.1, 6.4.1.2.1

 

 

Week 18: Minnesota and the Civil War

Students will be introduced to the events that led to the Civil War. They will also examine Minnesota’s role in the war. 6.1.1.1.1,6.4.1.2.1, 6.4.4.19.1, 6.4.4.19.2

 

 

Week 19: The Railroad Era

Students will study the history of the railroad industry in relation to Minnesota. 6.4.1.2.1, 6.4.4.20.1

 

 

Week 20: 1900: A New Century

Students learn about Minnesota at the beginning of the twentieth century. They will examine population, industries, education, culture, women’s rights and others. 6.4.1.2.1, 6.4.4.20.1, 6.4.4.20.2, 6.4.4.20.3

 

 

Week 21: Minnesota After World War I; Depression

Students will study World War I and Minnesota’s involvement. They will also look at factors of the Great Depression, such as worker’s strike, poverty and the New Deal. 6.4.1.2.1, 6.4.4.20.5

 

March-May

 

Week 22: Minnesota After World War II

Students will learn about World War II and the events that led up to it. They will discuss Minnesota’s role in the war. 6.4.1.2.1,6.4.4.21.1, 6.4.4.21.2, 6.4.4.21.4

 

 

Week 23: Minnesota Agriculture and Industry

Students will learn the importance of the agriculture industry, along with other industries important to Minnesota. 6.3.4.10.1

 

 

Week 24: Minnesota Cities and Manufacturing

Students will discuss corporations based out of Minnesota. They will also look at the different people who make up Minnesota’s society. 6.3.1.1.1

 

 

Week 25: Birds and Mammals of Minnesota

Students will discuss the wildlife of Minnesota. They will also look at why Minnesota is such a great place for wildlife to live.

 

 

Week 26: Famous Minnesota Recreation, Landmarks and Parklands

Students will learn about the great recreation found in Minnesota. They will also learn about many famous parks and landmarks of Minnesota. 6.3.1.1.1

 

 

Week 27: Minnesota Legends and Lore

Students will study fictional and real characters from Minnesota. They will also read legends of American Indian tribes from Minnesota. 6.4.1.2.1

 

 

Week 28: Careers

Students will look at various careers and the skills associated with each.
